So, if you&#8217;re interested in learning how to become better and increase your chances of working as a skipper, this series of interactive articles is for you.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"482\" data-end=\"554\">But what does \u201cgood\u201d mean, who decides that, and based on what criteria?<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"556\" data-end=\"905\">To shed light on the matter, I asked the opinions of various colleagues\u2014skippers, boat owners, crew and fleet managers from both large and small charter companies, brokers, base managers, clients, dockhands, marina workers, and others. I grouped their responses into general characteristics, and based on each one\u2019s role, here\u2019s what they told me&#8230;<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"907\" data-end=\"1013\">This is the <strong data-start=\"919\" data-end=\"928\">first<\/strong> article in the series and focuses <strong data-start=\"963\" data-end=\"994\">only on the nautical aspect<\/strong> of the profession.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1015\" data-end=\"1239\">We\u2019ll outline the general qualifications someone must have to <strong data-start=\"1077\" data-end=\"1096\">safely practice<\/strong> this profession\u2014this is the foundation upon which everything else is built, such as customer service, which we\u2019ll discuss in a future article.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"1241\" data-end=\"1244\" \/>\n<h3 data-start=\"1246\" data-end=\"1263\"><strong data-start=\"1250\" data-end=\"1263\">Knowledge<\/strong><\/h3>\n<h4 data-start=\"1265\" data-end=\"1295\"><strong data-start=\"1270\" data-end=\"1295\">Theoretical Knowledge<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p data-start=\"1297\" data-end=\"1466\">It&#8217;s essential for someone to have a solid understanding of a broad range of subjects related to navigating a boat at sea. The list is long, but here are some key areas:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1468\" data-end=\"1854\">\n<li data-start=\"1468\" data-end=\"1501\">\n<p data-start=\"1470\" data-end=\"1501\">Sailing and the forces involved<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1502\" data-end=\"1581\">\n<p data-start=\"1504\" data-end=\"1581\">Basic naval architecture, vessel stability, and anything related to seafaring<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1582\" data-end=\"1619\">\n<p data-start=\"1584\" data-end=\"1619\">Safety regulations and maritime law<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1620\" data-end=\"1654\">\n<p data-start=\"1622\" data-end=\"1654\">First aid and emergency response<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1655\" data-end=\"1688\">\n<p data-start=\"1657\" data-end=\"1688\">Communications and proper usage<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1689\" data-end=\"1736\">\n<p data-start=\"1691\" data-end=\"1736\">Meteorology and practical weather forecasting<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1737\" data-end=\"1773\">\n<p data-start=\"1739\" data-end=\"1773\">Navigation without electronic aids<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1774\" data-end=\"1818\">\n<p data-start=\"1776\" data-end=\"1818\">Use of the vessel\u2019s electronic instruments<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1819\" data-end=\"1854\">\n<p data-start=\"1821\" data-end=\"1854\">Material durability and corrosion<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr data-start=\"1856\" data-end=\"1859\" \/>\n<h4 data-start=\"1861\" data-end=\"1904\"><strong data-start=\"1866\" data-end=\"1904\">Practical Knowledge and Experience<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p data-start=\"1906\" data-end=\"1976\">Without practical application, theory is useless. Therefore, one must:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1978\" data-end=\"2204\">\n<li data-start=\"1978\" data-end=\"2204\">\n<p data-start=\"1980\" data-end=\"2049\">Be proficient in handling various types of rental vessels, including:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"2052\" data-end=\"2204\">\n<li data-start=\"2052\" data-end=\"2079\">\n<p data-start=\"2054\" data-end=\"2079\">Sailing and sail trimming<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2082\" data-end=\"2131\">\n<p data-start=\"2084\" data-end=\"2131\">Maneuvering with engine(s) in ports and marinas<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2134\" data-end=\"2204\">\n<p data-start=\"2136\" data-end=\"2204\">Sailing in difficult conditions (bad weather, night, low visibility)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr data-start=\"2206\" data-end=\"2209\" \/>\n<h3 data-start=\"2211\" data-end=\"2244\"><strong data-start=\"2215\" data-end=\"2244\">Basic Technical Knowledge<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2246\" data-end=\"2607\">Even though a skipper doesn\u2019t need to be a mechanic or sailmaker, the vessels they command are becoming increasingly complex. They must have the basic skills to deal with small issues at sea and be able to repair the boat\u2019s essential systems to safely reach the next port. If a problem is too complex, they must know whom to contact for guidance. This includes:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"2609\" data-end=\"2710\">\n<li data-start=\"2609\" data-end=\"2651\">\n<p data-start=\"2611\" data-end=\"2651\">Emergency hull, rigging, or sail repairs<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2652\" data-end=\"2664\">\n<p data-start=\"2654\" data-end=\"2664\">Mechanical<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2665\" data-end=\"2677\">\n<p data-start=\"2667\" data-end=\"2677\">Electrical<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2678\" data-end=\"2690\">\n<p data-start=\"2680\" data-end=\"2690\">Electronic<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2691\" data-end=\"2710\">\n<p data-start=\"2693\" data-end=\"2710\">Hydraulic systems<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr data-start=\"2712\" data-end=\"2715\" \/>\n<h3 data-start=\"2717\" data-end=\"2761\"><strong data-start=\"2721\" data-end=\"2761\">Knowledge of the Local Maritime Area<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2763\" data-end=\"2907\">Each region has its peculiarities. A skilled professional has a pool of information relevant to every area they\u2019re expected to sail in, such as:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"2909\" data-end=\"3350\">\n<li data-start=\"2909\" data-end=\"2936\">\n<p data-start=\"2911\" data-end=\"2936\">Seasonal weather patterns<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2937\" data-end=\"2999\">\n<p data-start=\"2939\" data-end=\"2999\">Re-supply ports (where water and power are available or not)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3000\" data-end=\"3088\">\n<p data-start=\"3002\" data-end=\"3088\">Which ports are affected by which weather conditions and when they become inaccessible<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3089\" data-end=\"3167\">\n<p data-start=\"3091\" data-end=\"3167\">Which days each port is usually full and what time to arrive to find a berth<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3168\" data-end=\"3219\">\n<p data-start=\"3170\" data-end=\"3219\">How to secure a berth even if a port appears full<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3220\" data-end=\"3268\">\n<p data-start=\"3222\" data-end=\"3268\">Sheltered bays and anchorages based on weather<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3269\" data-end=\"3312\">\n<p data-start=\"3271\" data-end=\"3312\">Sea routes that make the journey smoother<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3313\" data-end=\"3350\">\n<p data-start=\"3315\" data-end=\"3350\">Areas with hidden potential dangers<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr data-start=\"3352\" data-end=\"3355\" \/>\n<h3 data-start=\"3357\" data-end=\"3390\"><strong data-start=\"3361\" data-end=\"3390\">Personality and Character<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"3392\" data-end=\"3487\">Beyond knowledge and experience, a skipper needs character-based skills and qualities, such as:<\/p>\n<h4 data-start=\"3489\" data-end=\"3510\"><strong data-start=\"3494\" data-end=\"3510\">Staying Calm<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p data-start=\"3512\" data-end=\"3657\">No matter what happens on the boat, the skipper must never lose composure. A panicked or out-of-control skipper can lead to dangerous situations.<\/p>\n<h4 data-start=\"3659\" data-end=\"3683\"><strong data-start=\"3664\" data-end=\"3683\">Inspiring Trust<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p data-start=\"3685\" data-end=\"3900\">The skipper must always maintain control of the vessel and ensure all passengers feel safe. They must appear competent and confident\u2014especially during difficult moments when everyone expects them to find a solution.<\/p>\n<h4 data-start=\"3902\" data-end=\"3930\"><strong data-start=\"3907\" data-end=\"3930\">Prioritizing Safety<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p data-start=\"3932\" data-end=\"4052\">Every decision must be based on the safety of the boat and passengers\u2014not ego or appearances\u2014even if it takes more time.<\/p>\n<h4 data-start=\"4054\" data-end=\"4075\"><strong data-start=\"4059\" data-end=\"4075\">Decisiveness<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p data-start=\"4077\" data-end=\"4281\">Whether to stay or go, tack or not\u2014at every moment, the skipper must make the next move with confidence. They must think things through, stay committed, and convey their decisions confidently to the crew.<\/p>\n<h4 data-start=\"4283\" data-end=\"4305\"><strong data-start=\"4288\" data-end=\"4305\">Staying Alert<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p data-start=\"4307\" data-end=\"4447\">Whether sailing or sleeping, the skipper must constantly supervise the vessel and ensure the passengers\u2019 safety, ready to act at any moment.<\/p>\n<h4 data-start=\"4449\" data-end=\"4467\"><strong data-start=\"4454\" data-end=\"4467\">Awareness<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p data-start=\"4469\" data-end=\"4770\">They must keep all senses sharp and read between the lines. Using instinct, common sense, and attention to detail, they should notice things others miss. For example, while someone might say, \u201cLook how shiny that yacht is,\u201d the skipper notices that one spreader is at a different angle than the other.<\/p>\n<h4 data-start=\"4772\" data-end=\"4790\"><strong data-start=\"4777\" data-end=\"4790\">Foresight<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p data-start=\"4792\" data-end=\"4949\">Using their experience, they must avoid difficult situations. And when unavoidable, they should prepare well in advance and brief the crew on what to expect.<\/p>\n<h4 data-start=\"4951\" data-end=\"4984\"><strong data-start=\"4956\" data-end=\"4984\">Persistence and Patience<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p data-start=\"4986\" data-end=\"5128\">This profession demands high levels of patience and resilience\u2014both physically and mentally. Tough weather and challenging clients are common.<\/p>\n<h4 data-start=\"5130\" data-end=\"5153\"><strong data-start=\"5135\" data-end=\"5153\">Responsibility<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p data-start=\"5155\" data-end=\"5341\">They must take responsibility for their actions\u2014right or wrong\u2014and not shift blame onto the crew or faulty boat. They are legally and practically accountable for everything that happens.<\/p>\n<h4 data-start=\"5343\" data-end=\"5366\"><strong data-start=\"5348\" data-end=\"5366\">Self-Awareness<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p data-start=\"5368\" data-end=\"5498\">They must understand their own limitations, the boat\u2019s capabilities, the crew\u2019s endurance, and base every major decision on these.<\/p>\n<h4 data-start=\"5500\" data-end=\"5540\"><strong data-start=\"5505\" data-end=\"5540\">Acknowledging Their Limitations<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p data-start=\"5542\" data-end=\"5705\">There\u2019s so much to know that no one can know everything. A good skipper isn\u2019t afraid to admit ignorance but must always know where to find the missing information.<\/p>\n<h4 data-start=\"5707\" data-end=\"5732\"><strong data-start=\"5712\" data-end=\"5732\">Love of Learning<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p data-start=\"5734\" data-end=\"5872\">They must have a genuine curiosity and never stop learning. That\u2019s the only way to stay current and active in a rapidly evolving industry.<\/p>\n<h4 data-start=\"5874\" data-end=\"5905\"><strong data-start=\"5879\" data-end=\"5905\">Learning from Mistakes<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p data-start=\"5907\" data-end=\"6102\">The only one who\u2019s never caused damage is the one who never left port. Mistakes and minor incidents happen to even the best; what matters is reflecting on them to reduce the chance of recurrence.<\/p>\n<h4 data-start=\"6104\" data-end=\"6131\"><strong data-start=\"6109\" data-end=\"6131\">Facing Their Fears<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p data-start=\"6133\" data-end=\"6367\">A good skipper isn\u2019t fearless but knows how to manage fear effectively without compromising service. Experience and knowledge lessen fear, but unusual events can still bring new, unexpected fears. The key is learning how to face them.<\/p>\n<h4 data-start=\"6369\" data-end=\"6398\"><strong data-start=\"6374\" data-end=\"6398\">Being Well-Connected<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p data-start=\"6400\" data-end=\"6583\">Some solutions, services, or information are only accessible to those within the right networks. The more \u201cconnections\u201d someone has, the more effective they become in this profession.<\/p>\n<h4 data-start=\"6585\" data-end=\"6601\"><strong data-start=\"6590\" data-end=\"6601\">Respect<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p data-start=\"6603\" data-end=\"6762\">For the lives they carry, the vessel they command, the weather, the sea, other sea users, the environment, the places they visit\u2014and above all, for themselves.<\/p>\n<h4 data-start=\"6764\" data-end=\"6781\"><strong data-start=\"6769\" data-end=\"6781\">Humility<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p data-start=\"6783\" data-end=\"6933\">No matter how skilled they are, arrogance should be avoided. Know-it-all behavior and arrogance leave a bad impression\u2014and can sometimes be dangerous.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"6935\" data-end=\"6938\" \/>\n<h3 data-start=\"6940\" data-end=\"6961\"><strong data-start=\"6944\" data-end=\"6961\">Other Virtues<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"6963\" data-end=\"7017\">Integrity, kindness, culture, calmness, and diligence.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"7019\" data-end=\"7022\" \/>\n<p data-start=\"7024\" data-end=\"7246\">Many of you will recognize your own opinions in the above text, as shared with me in previous posts.
